Develop and assess the numeracy skills that underpin safe practice

safeHANDS is underpinned by over 30 years of research and extends the scope of our widely used Foundation Numeracy Assessment (FNA) module. It incorporates 20 core areas of healthcare numeracy that underpin and inform the safe practice of a wide range of nursing proficiencies and clinical procedures.

safeHANDS makes it easy to assess your learners' capability to develop the numeracy skills required to meet programme outcomes and provides a platform to support them in continuously developing their abilities in numeracy throughout their studies.

ASSESS UP TO 20 CORE AREAS OF HEALTHCARE NUMERACY

  • Addition of Whole Numbers
  • Subtraction of Whole Numbers
  • Multiplication of Whole Numbers
  • Division of Whole Numbers
  • Negative Numbers
  • Fractions
  • Decimals
  • Percentage
  • Ratio
  • Equivalences between fractions, decimals, percentages
  • Conversion between SI and other measurement units
  • Conceptual problem solving
  • Formula & Equations
  • Rounding of Numbers
  • Estimation
  • Indices & Logarithms
  • Calculator Use
  • Measurement
  • Interpretation of tables, charts and graphs
  • Statistics

When scheduling a safeHANDS assessment for your learners, you can choose to include as many or as few of the skill domains providing the utmost flexibility in terms of learner or curriculum requirements.

COMPRISES 6 KEY ELEMENTS

BASELINE HEALTHCARE MATHEMATICS MCQ ASSESSMENT

Assess entry level capability

At programme outset, provide your learners with a baseline formative healthcare mathematics MCQ assessment of the 20 fundamental mathematical building blocks of nursing science and practice.

HEALTHCARE MATHEMATICS PERFORMANCE FINGERPRINT

Identify your learners strengths and weaknesses

The Healthcare Mathematics Performance Fingerprint (HMPF) enables you to identify your learners' strengths and weaknesses in mathematics right from the outset and better plan their support and development needs to help them progress successfully through the programme.

Within the HMPF each block represents an assessment item (3 per skill domain) and colour-coding differentiates between correctly and incorrectly answered questions.

POINT OF REGISTRATION INDIVIDUAL HEALTHCARE NUMERACY SKILL ASSESSMENT

Assess the individual skill domains

Assess your learners' competence development in each of the 20 individual skills domains in authentic practice contexts at key progression points throughout the curriculum and at the point of registration / licensure.

COMBINATORY HEALTHCARE NUMERACY ASSESSMENT

Assess combinations of skill domains

Assess your learners' competence development using combinations of the 20 skill domains in sequences that reflect the numeracy requirements of common clinical procedures e.g. taking a pulse.

MATHEMATICS & HEALTHCARE NUMERACY LEARNING SUPPORT ENVIRONMENT

Support learners competence development.

Provide learner support in crafting competence in the 20 individual healthcare numeracy skill domains through detailed exemplar video tutorials for accurately and appropriately solving nursing mathematics and healthcare numeracy problems.

HEALTHCARE NUMERACY PERFORMANCE FINGERPRINT

Visualise in-context competency performance

The Healthcare Numeracy Performance Fingerprint (HNPF) enables you to view a detailed profile of learner numeracy performance in each of the 20 individual healthcare numeracy skill domains set in authentic nursing practice contexts.
